I love RPG maker. It seems like a fantastic tool. There are scripts and community-made addons that make it very versatile, and through a few simple tricks like Parallax Mapping, the griddy, single-layered nature of the art style can be mitigated. You can insert your own menus, your own music, your own art, your own scripts - If one wanted, they could develop an RPG that looks NOTHING like the standard RPG Maker RPG and still be able to do so more conveniently than if you were to design one using other tools. Why, then, do so many RPG Maker games release with stock assets, and a stock combat system? Why are so many characters in RPG Maker games of that same bloated, fat style that comes stock? Why isn't the tool ever used to create something with a unique look? The only RPG Maker game that I can think of that has been commercially released and has done its best to differentiate itself from stock RPG Maker is To The Moon. Are there others? I believe it started out as a Suikoden fan-game (the similarities can't be ignored, especially in the beginning) but it quickly becomes it's own beast a few hours in. I sunk over 70 hours in this game back in the day which is more than I spend on most full-length RPGs so Exit Fate certainly has meat to it.

It's not completely custom though and uses assets from other games (get used to hearing Frog's Theme from CT), but I'll be damned if the rest doesn't make up for it. Would have loved to see something new and completely custom from the dev, but they've seemed to have disappeared off the face of the earth.Other than that, like others have said there's Lisa. I'd also recommend checking out Ara Fell, The Amber Throne, Off, Brave Hero Yuusha and Alter A.I.L.A Genesis. I know there's probably a ton more I'm forgetting but those are some unique looking RPGs.
